Slowly cultivating deep bonds
Sincere (Russian душевный, symbol RE) is one of socionics' four Communication Styles, the group of 8 types formed by the combination of Ethics (F) × Introversion (I). It is positioned at mid-level sociability (deep within the inner / intimate circle).
The core conversational principle is "passive search for emotion" — slowly cultivating deep bonds. First named in Gulenko's 1996 paper "Жизненные сценарии," and later developed for practical application in his book Соционика для руководителей (Socionics for Managers, Chapter 6).
Sincere contains one type from each of Model K's 8 Quadras, for 8 in total. This is an important structural feature of the Communication Styles: it shows that the classification is an axis independent of the value groups (Quadras). The same conversational mode is shared by people with different values and different outlooks on life.

The Sincere style arises from the crossing of F+I (Ethics × Introversion) by structural necessity. Introversion (I) directs attention to the inner world and selected relationships; Ethics (F) takes feeling and human relations as its currency of exchange. Their combination produces a conversational mode that cultivates deep emotional bonds within a chosen intimate circle and expresses the relationship through indirect signals.
All 8 Sincere types carry Fi (Ethics of relations) or Fe (Ethics of emotion) in the Ego block, in a configuration where these are held introvertedly. The Fi-leading (EII, ESI) center personal bonds and evaluations; the Fi-creative types (IEI, SEI expressing Fi) support relations through quiet empathy and fine-grained attentiveness. Implementing — not in volubility but in sure attachment to a chosen partner — this is the natural contact mode of Sincere.
The following is from Gulenko's paper "Жизненные сценарии: От этических чувств к сенсорным желаниям" (Соционика, ментология и психология личности, 1996, No. 1).
The conversational pattern common to the Sincere type, organized by stage of relational development. This is not an individual personality trait but a tendency observed statistically and structurally in people sharing this style.
Each of the 8 Sincere types stands in a Dual relation (complete complementarity) with a specific Business-like type. In Gulenko 1996, this is described as the most natural and stable combination in interpersonal relations.
In Gulenko's original, the "Sincere × Business-like" combination is described as homeostasis (self-sustaining equilibrium):
Importantly, a Dual relation does not require both partners to share the same style. A Sincere person stands in Dual with one specific type determined by Business-like × Quadra × Q/D combination. Even among Business-like types, depending on one's own Quadra and Q/D placement, the Dual partner is determined uniquely.
The relations of Sincere with the other Communication Style groups can be organized according to Gulenko's 6 original scenarios. The shared axis (E/I or T/F) determines the quality of the relation.
| Partner style | Features of the relation |
|---|---|
| Passionate (F + E) | Shares Ethics (F) — a "Mirror-type" relation. Ethical empathy runs deep, but emotional ups and downs tend toward theatricality. |
| Business-like (T + E) | Dual (Homeostasis) — The Sincere yields under the Business-like's push, takes the edge off, and restores equilibrium. One of the best combinations. |
| Cold-blooded (T + I) | Shares Introversion (I) — an "Activation-type" relation. Both are introverted and keep their distance, so conflicts are few but deep emotional exchange is also rare. Stable, but the relationship develops slowly. |
The Sincere type is distributed across all 8 Quadras. While sharing the same conversational principle of "passive search for emotion," its expression varies with the values of the Quadra each member belongs to.
The Sincere type is distributed one type per Quadra across all 8 Quadras (α: SEI-D Mediator · β: IEI-Q Dreamer · γ: ESI-Q Guardian · δ: EII-D Empath · −α: ESI-D Protector · −β: EII-Q Philosopher · −γ: SEI-Q Expressionist · −δ: IEI-D Prophet). Sharing the same conversational principle of "maintaining bonds within the intimate circle," expression varies with the values of the Quadra.
α and −γ (Merry-Judicious group, SEI-rooted) cultivate calm, warm everyday bonds. β and −δ (Merry-Resolute group, IEI-rooted) carry poetic, narrative emotion and inner devotion. γ and −α (Serious-Resolute group, ESI-rooted) bring strong personal loyalty, ethical selection, and attachment to the genuine. δ and −β (Serious-Judicious group, EII-rooted) bring ethical insight into humanity and deep empathy.
Among Reinin's 15 dichotomy traits, the 8 Sincere types share the following as a common set:
| Axis | Shared value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Extraversion/Introversion | Introversion (I) | Direction of attention and energy |
| Logic/Ethics | Ethics (F) | Nature of the information exchanged (objective fact vs. subjective emotion) |
| Yielding/Obstinate | Yielding | Degree of self-holding within a relationship — a third independent axis distinguishing the Dual-pair groups |
| Theory | Corresponding type | Shared features |
|---|---|---|
| Merrill & Reid Social Style (1968) | Amiable | Restrained emotional expression and mild assertiveness. Highly cooperative, valuing stability and harmony. |
| DISC theory | S (Steadiness) | Steadiness — patient, cooperative, and values the relationship. |
| MBTI | Same F + I axis | Formed by the same combination of Extraversion and Judgment function. MBTI and socionics are distinct theories, but this axis is shared. |
