A traveler whose heart leaps at the unknown
Wanderer is the group within Childlike (the Romance/love-style with intuition Ne in the leading block) that takes the +Ne polarity. Paired with Mentor (−Ne, accompanying type), it is the "exploratory" variant of the intuitive type.
+Ne carries the polarity of process / diffusion and handles possibility by opening it broadly and turning toward new mysteries. In contrast to −Ne's "focal accompaniment that narrows in on a particular person's possibilities," it lets the heart leap at unknown territories, new ways of thinking, and unexpected encounters, traversing the world as a playground.
In romance, the Wanderer experiences the partner as "a fellow explorer of the world." Different from intense passion or exclusive possession, they seek a relationship that shares intellectual curiosity and pure wonder. They may appear "lacking in seriousness" at first glance, but the essence is an unceasing questioning toward the mysteries of the world, and they are earnestly looking for a partner with whom they can enjoy those questions together.
Wanderer corresponds in Model K to four base types × Q form, distributed across the α Quadra (Genesis) and −β Quadra (Civil Society). In both Quadras the irrational function is unified at + polarity (process/diffusion focus), sharing the same Promotion focus as Homemaker.
The four types diverge in expressive style according to their rational functions (Ti / Fi), but all share the +Ne leading block and the common structure of inquisitiveness toward the unknown and intellectual curiosity that plays with possibility.
Beyond the leading block, the four types share identical values on the following 6 axes. These form the structural foundation of the "Wanderer" style.
| Trait axis | Shared value | Manifestation in relationship-building |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | + polarity (process / diffusion) | Promotion focus — diffusive orientation toward possibility and exploration |
| Perception function | Intuition (N) | Apprehends the relationship through possibility, abstraction, and temporal development |
| Question / Declaration | Question (Q) | Builds the relationship exploratorily through dialogue and inquiry |
| Static / Dynamic | Static | Grasps the relationship as a structure; prefers clear roles and positions |
| Prudent / Resolute | Prudent | Acts only after deliberation and assessment; keeps cautious distance |
| Democratic / Aristocratic | Democratic | Sees the partner as an individual; orients toward equal relationships |
+Ne (process/diffusion) functions toward "opening possibility broadly" and "heading into the unknown." Whereas −Ne (result/control) "finds possibility narrowed to a particular person or situation," +Ne grasps the whole world as a field of possibility, leaping into new ways of thinking, encounters, and experiences.
For the Wanderer, the world is a mystery to traverse. Books, people, places, concepts — all become objects of exploration, and the curiosity shared with the partner is the core of the relationship.
The Wanderer's suggestive function is +Si (the diffusion of comfort, the generation of a warm place). It corresponds to the leading function +Si of the dual partner (Homemaker). Owing to the structure of Model K's Dual relation, duals correspond in leading and suggestive function with the same element and the same polarity.
Through the suggestive +Si, the Wanderer looks for "a warm place to come home to from the journey of inquiry." For the Wanderer who jumps from one new interest to the next, the existence of someone who arranges the life-foundation is indispensable. The Wanderer tends to put care for the body and daily life on the back burner, and the warmth that the Homemaker provides fills that gap. An abundantly filled place is what makes the Wanderer's inquiry sustainable.
In Higgins's regulatory focus theory, the Wanderer is located in Promotion focus. "New discoveries" and "gains of the unknown" sit at the motivational center; energy is directed toward finding something new rather than guarding against loss. That is why they are open, light on their feet, and never stop questioning.
Based on Gulenko 1996's primary description of Childlike, refined for the +Ne polarity.
Has the charm of a boy bursting with intellectual curiosity. Poor at deep passion-displays, he expresses love through interesting topics and shared discoveries. Holding diverse domains of interest, he seeks women as "fellow explorers of the world." Possessiveness and exclusivity are thin; he respects the partner's independence. Weak at the practical work of life, he enriches the relationship with intellectual conversation and new experiences. Not skilled at concrete attentiveness, he deeply needs a partner who provides a warm place.
A woman combining girlish curiosity with intellect. The Seeker (ILE-Q) form shows her unique appeal through intellectual excitement and logic; the Counselor (IEE-Q) form through intuition about people and possibilities. Rather than the domestic role, she treasures her own interests and inquiry. She places value on intellectual resonance over passionate ardor. She seeks in a man "an intellectual companion who enjoys her world together with her" and dislikes binding or formal relationships.
The Wanderer's dual substyle is Homemaker (Hospitable Caring, +Si). They share the same Promotion focus and stand in the functional complementarity of Ne ↔ Si.
A traveler whose heart leaps at the unknown. Seeks a warm place that supports the journey of inquiry, and a partner with whom they can share their curiosity.
Fills the place that belongs to the two of you with warmth. Wishes to share an abundant daily life with a partner who brings a new breeze and new discoveries to the place they have arranged.
| Quadra | Wanderer | ↔ | Homemaker |
|---|---|---|---|
| α (Genesis) | ILE-Q Seeker | ↔ | SEI-D Mediator |
| α (Genesis) | LII-Q Analyst | ↔ | ESE-D Enthusiast |
| −β (Civil Society) | IEE-Q Counselor | ↔ | SLI-D Craftsman |
| −β (Civil Society) | EII-Q Philosopher | ↔ | LSE-D Executive |
The "fresh discoveries and the breeze of intellectual curiosity" that the Wanderer offers answers the Homemaker's deep need for "the arranged place coming alive." The Homemaker's work of arranging daily life is kept from sinking into inertia, always filled with new topics and discoveries — and at that moment, the Homemaker's suggestive function +Ne is fulfilled.
Conversely, the Homemaker's "abundant, warm place" is experienced by the Wanderer as "a base to return to from the journey of inquiry." For the Wanderer whose interests shift from one to the next, a place that welcomes them warmly without change is the foundation that makes inquiry sustainable. The experience of "not only exploring but having a place to come home to" fulfills the Wanderer's Si suggestive function.
The two deepen their bond through a cycle of exploration and hospitality. Going out and returning, discovering and sharing, the round-trip of a new wind and an unchanging warmth — through this cycle, the Wanderer's +Ne curiosity and the Homemaker's +Si abundance sustain each other. This is a textbook case of the well-being advantage of same-polarity couples (Promotion-Promotion) demonstrated in Bohns et al. (2013)'s "Opposites fit" research.
When the 16 combinations of 4 Wanderer types × 4 Homemaker types are unfolded in Model K's relational theory, all are classified as "complementary" or "affinitive" relations, and no negative relations (Conflict, Super-Ego, Supervision, Opposition, etc.) appear at all. This is a structural consequence of both substyles sharing the Promotion focus (+ polarity) wholesale.
| Wanderer \ Homemaker | SEI-D Mediator (α) | ESE-D Enthusiast (α) | SLI-D Craftsman (−β) | LSE-D Executive (−β) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ILE-Q Seeker (α) | Dual | Activation | Kindred | Beneficiary |
| LII-Q Analyst (α) | Activation | Dual | Benefit | Mirror |
| IEE-Q Counselor (−β) | Kindred | Beneficiary | Dual | Activation |

The quality of compatibility is determined by polarity alignment and complementarity of courtship roles.
| Compatibility | Partner | Quality of relation |
|---|---|---|
| Dual | Homemaker (+Si Hospitable Caring) | Shared Promotion + Ne-Si complementarity. A light bond through the cycle of exploration and hospitality. |
| Same polarity | Hunter (+Se Pioneering Aggressor) | Shared Promotion. Dynamic curiosity and dynamic action resonate; an adventurous relationship. |
| Same polarity | Ironist (+Ni Comic Victim) | Shared Promotion. Intellectual conversation and future-orientation resonate; a relationship of unceasing talk. |
| Counter-pair | Mentor (−Ne Accompanying Childlike) | Same Childlike, but inverted polarity. Resembles in intuitive function but differs in motivation: open exploration vs. focal accompaniment. |
| Opposite polarity | Concierge (−Si Practical Caring) | Roles complement, but motivational structure is inverted: open curiosity vs. focal care. |
| Opposite polarity | Dreamer (−Ni Tragic Victim) | The Wanderer's lightness struggles to reach a fated heaviness. |
| Opposite polarity | Owner (−Se Possessive Aggressor) | The Wanderer can feel suffocated by an exclusive-possession orientation. |
| Same type | Wanderer (+Ne × +Ne) | Conversation never runs out, but together they struggle to arrange the life-foundation, posing challenges for long-term relations. |
Wanderer is distributed across the two Quadras α and −β. While sharing +Ne, the rational function (Ti / Fi) and the values context differentiate the style of exploration.
ILE-Q Seeker, LII-Q Analyst. Under the influence of Ti (structural logic), exploration is directed toward concepts and ideas. Interest in new theories, knowledge domains, and thought experiments sits at the center. "Intellectual discovery" is the motive of inquiry.
IEE-Q Counselor, EII-Q Philosopher. Under the influence of Fi (relational ethics), exploration is directed toward people and meaning. Interest in the uniqueness of people one meets, the meaning of life, and ethical questions sits at the center. "Human discovery" is the motive of inquiry.
The Wanderer's Promotion focus and orientation toward inquiry are consistent with several theories of psychology and education.
| Theory | Correspondence with Wanderer |
|---|---|
| Higgins (1997, 1998) Regulatory Focus Theory | Promotion focus (pursuit of possibility, approach to the ideal self). "New discoveries" and "gains of the unknown" sit at the motivational center. |
| Sternberg (1986) Triangular Theory of Love | Intimacy (intellectual closeness) is central. Rather than Passion or Commitment, intellectual resonance is the core of the relationship. |
| Berlyne (1960) Psychology of exploratory behavior | A textbook case of novelty-seeking and epistemic curiosity. |
| Csikszentmihalyi Flow theory | Enters the flow state when immersed in new questions. Learning and discovery become the reward. |
| Gray RST | BAS (Behavioral Activation System) dominant — reward approach, novelty-seeking. Corresponds to Davidson's left-frontal asymmetry (approach motivation). |
