The character of this Octad
Quest is the group of eight types sharing the three axes Irrational × Positivist × Questim. Improvisationally opening to the situation (Irrational), positively grasping the possibility that is present (Positivist), and broadening without asserting, layering questions (Questim). When the three overlap, the consistent stance of "exploring new possibilities through dialogue" rises up.
Looking at the line-up — Seeker, Counselor, Dreamer, Performer, Artisan, Critic — types skilled in curiosity, possibility, expression and savoring stand side by side. The Seeker (ILE) questions new ideas, the Counselor (IEE) draws out people's possibilities, the Performer (SEE) moves the room, the Dreamer (IEI) imagines the future, the Artisan (SLI) savors beauty. No one rushes to a conclusion; they keep opening questions like "wouldn't this be interesting?" or "what other paths are there?"
Among the four Octads, Quest is the most open and optimistic group. It does not hold a fixed plan and always keeps a door open to possibility. Rather than asserting something, it first asks and explores — that soft posture of exploration is the color of this group.
The three traits the eight share
The eight in Quest all come from different quadras yet completely share three binary traits. The combination of these three axes — Irrational × Positivist × Questim — is precisely what determines Quest's color as a group. Temperament, club and internal compatibility all follow from these three axes.
When improvisation (Irrational), possibility-orientation (Positivist) and questioning (Questim) overlap, the stance is unrestrained by plan, open to the situation, looks at "the possibility that is here now" rather than what is not yet, and casts it as a question rather than asserting. The three combined produce a light and open posture of exploration.
Members — the eight types
Quest is the eight-person group that gathers one type sharing Irrational × Positivist × Questim from each of the eight quadras (α · -α · β · -β · γ · -γ · δ · -δ).
Internal allocation — eight people carrying one style
The eight who share the same three axes divide roles inside the group. The diversity of values (all eight quadras), the diversity of interests (all four clubs) and the balance of extraversion and introversion all converge under the same style. The division can be organized by a lattice of two temperaments (Flexible-Maneuvering / Receptive-Adaptive) × four clubs (Researchers · Socials · Humanitarians · Pragmatists).
| Researchers | Socials | Humanitarians | Pragmatists | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Go probe (Flexible-Maneuvering) | Seeker ILE-Q α | Performer SEE-Q γ | Counselor IEE-Q -β | Reformer SLE-Q -δ |
| Receive and savor (Receptive-Adaptive) | Critic ILI-Q -α | Expressionist SEI-Q -γ | Dreamer IEI-Q β | Artisan SLI-Q δ |
The two people in each column (the same club) are a value-inverted pair (sharing the interest but with opposite values — an extravert/introvert pair). The four people in each row (the same temperament) cover all four clubs, one each.
Multi-angled vantage through all value-sets
The eight in Quest cover all eight quadras' values, one each — α (Seeker) · -β (Counselor) · γ (Performer) · -δ (Reformer) · -α (Critic) · β (Dreamer) · -γ (Expressionist) · δ (Artisan). What binds the eight is not values but the shared style Irrational × Positivist × Questim. Because they are loosely bound by style, all mutually opposing values can be housed in one group. Quest is a group that can unfold the single stance of "exploration" multi-angularly through the angles of every value-set.
Role in the crisis/transition cycle
Quest stands at the starting point of the crisis/transition cycle. The previous stage, Judge (Verification), discerns the defects of the old order; inheriting that question (bridging axis = Questim), Quest begins to explore new possibilities.
In the vacuum where the old order has lost its power and nothing is yet decided, it improvisationally enters the situation and finds the bud of possibility. The possibility Quest finds is handed on to the next stage, Forge (Construction) — the two share the stance of Positivist (bridging axis = Positivist), so what was explored is carried into the construction phase while remaining affirmed.
