A hunter who reads the moment and catches the wave
Hunter is the group within Aggressor (the Romance/love-style class whose leading block carries sensing Se) that takes the +Se polarity. It is the "pioneering" variant of the sensing type, paired with Owner (the −Se possessive variant).
+Se has the polarity of process / diffusion, and handles force in the direction of "capturing opportunities broadly" and "riding the wave forward." In contrast to −Se's targeted, exclusive occupation, it keeps several possibilities in view at once, with the flexibility to refocus instantly on whichever target is responding best.
In romance the Hunter broadcasts their appeal widely, finds the partner who responds, and actively makes moves. Opportunity, freshness, and forward motion are the heart of their motivation, and the relationship is experienced as "something that grows dynamically." They are sometimes seen as "light," but their essence is a perpetually open sensibility together with the quick reflexes to never miss a wave. They choose dynamism over stagnation, pioneering over conservatism.
Under Model K, Hunter is made up of four base types in their Q form, distributed across the γ Quadra (Market) and the −δ Quadra (Revolution). In both Quadras the irrational functions take the + polarity (process / diffusion focus), so Hunter shares the same Promotion focus as Ironist.
The four types diverge in their mode of expression according to the rational function (Fi / Ti), but all of them share the +Se leading block and the common structure of opportunity-capture and wave-riding reflexes.
Beyond the leading block, the four types share the same value on the following six axes. Together they form the structural basis of the "Hunter" style.
| Trait axis | Shared value | Manifestation in relationship-building |
|---|---|---|
| Polarity | + polarity (process / diffusion) | Promotion focus — a diffusive orientation toward opportunity and abundance |
| Perception function | Sensing (S) | Experiences the relationship through concrete reality, embodiment, and the tangible feedback of real things |
| Question / Declaration | Question (Q) | Builds the relationship exploratorily through dialogue and questioning |
| Static / Dynamic | Static | Grasps the relationship as a structure; prefers clear roles and positions |
| Prudent / Resolute | Resolute | Quick decisions and direct action; the resolve never to miss a moment |
| Democratic / Aristocratic | Democratic | Sees the partner as an individual and aims at an egalitarian relationship |
+Se (process / diffusion) is oriented toward "the broad capture of opportunities and the shift to new targets." Whereas −Se (result / control) tries to hold securely onto a chosen target, +Se has the flexibility always to keep several possibilities in view and to switch focus instantly with the movement of the wave.
For the Hunter, force is seizing the moment. Read the flow of the scene, move instantly toward the most responsive object, never let an opportunity slip. This diffusive use of force is the essence of +Se.
The Hunter's suggestive function is +Ni (the branching of time, the foresight of parallel possibilities). This matches the leading function +Ni of the dual partner (Ironist). By the structure of the Dual relation in Model K, the two duals correspond with the same element and same polarity in leading and suggestive functions.
What the Hunter expects through the suggestive +Ni is "a partner who, atop their constantly moving life, gives them a light sense of meaning and narrative foresight." While capturing practical opportunities, the Hunter deeply needs a presence who can read where the motion is heading and what branching options lie ahead. The ironic distance and futurity of the Ironist are precisely what give Hunter's activity perspective.
In terms of Higgins's Regulatory Focus Theory, the Hunter sits at Promotion (promotion focus). "Gaining" and "advancing" are at the center of motivation; acquiring new opportunities takes priority over securing the certainty of what is already held. That is why Hunter is dynamic, open, and driven by freshness. Not a defect but a natural consequence of the Promotion focus.
A description refined for the +Se polarity, based on the original Aggressor account in Gulenko 1996.
Broadcasts confident charm widely and actively approaches women who respond. Sociable, energetic, and skilled at proposing new places and experiences. Has several spheres of interest at once and discerns from among the women he meets the one most responsive to him before making his move. Passionate but disliking constraint; seeks freshness and dynamism in a relationship. Marked by direct expressions of intent and decisive action, and adept at moving the partner.
Conscious of her own charm and strategic in deploying it. Sociable, dazzling, and able to choose men and move them. The Guardian (ESI-Q) type shows ethical judgment and careful screening; the Performer (SEE-Q) type shows brilliant presence and opportunity-capture as their respective strengths. Passionate but allergic to being constrained — she wants the initiative in the relationship. Prefers new experiences and dynamic relationships, and is keenly responsive to the partner's signals.
The Hunter's dual substyle is Ironist (Comic Victim, +Ni). Both share the same Promotion focus and have a functional Se ↔ Ni complementary relationship.
A hunter who reads the moment and catches the wave. Wants to broadcast their charm widely and build a dynamic relationship with whoever responds.
Lightening heavy fate with wit. Sees through the flow, keeps a wry distance, and gives the wave of opportunity its meaning and story.
| Quadra | Hunter | ↔ | Ironist |
|---|---|---|---|
| γ (Market) | SEE-Q Performer | ↔ | ILI-D Strategist |
| γ (Market) | ESI-Q Guardian | ↔ | LIE-D Pioneer |
| −δ (Revolution) | SLE-Q Reformer | ↔ | IEI-D Prophet |
| −δ (Revolution) | LSI-Q Overseer | ↔ | EIE-D Hero |
The "force that seizes the moment and rides the wave forward" supplied by the Hunter answers perfectly to the Ironist's wish "to cross the waves of life lightly." Though a Victim, the Ironist refuses tragic gravity, and by riding on the Hunter's drive realizes the experience of "reading meaning while moving."
Conversely, the Ironist's "ironic distance" and "foresight of the future" are experienced by the Hunter as "a compass for motion." Their actions are given perspective, and a chain of opportunities is understood as "chapters of a story" — at that moment Hunter's motivation is fully consummated. The experience of "not only moving but also having meaning in the motion" satisfies the Hunter's Ni suggestive function.
The two deepen their bond through a light ritual of play. Irony and laughter, motion and observation, expansion and overview — through this cycle, the Hunter's +Se-style verve and the Ironist's +Ni-style perspective support each other. It is a textbook example of the well-being advantage of same-polarity (Promotion-Promotion) couples shown by Bohns et al. (2013) "Opposites fit."
When the 16 combinations of the 4 Hunter types × 4 Ironist types are spread across Model K relational theory, every one of them falls into a "complementary" or "affinity" relation, and not a single negative relation (Conflict, Super-Ego, Supervision, Contrary, etc.) appears. This is a structural consequence of the two substyles fully sharing the Promotion focus (+ polarity).
| Hunter \ Ironist | ILI-D Strategist (γ) | LIE-D Pioneer (γ) | IEI-D Prophet (−δ) | EIE-D Hero (−δ) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEE-Q Performer (γ) | Dual | Activation | Kindred | Benefit |
| ESI-Q Guardian (γ) | Activation | Dual | Beneficiary | Mirror |
| SLE-Q Reformer (−δ) | Kindred | Benefit | Dual | Activation |
| LSI-Q Overseer (−δ) | Beneficiary | Mirror | Activation | Dual |

The quality of compatibility is determined by matching polarity and the complementarity of courtship roles.
| Compatibility | Partner | Quality of the relationship |
|---|---|---|
| Dual | Ironist (+Ni Comic V) | Shared Promotion + Se-Ni complementarity. A dynamic bond through the light ritual of play. |
| Same polarity | Homemaker (+Si Hospitable C) | Shared Promotion, warm and dynamic. A companionable relationship enjoying new experiences together. |
| Same polarity | Wanderer (+Ne Exploratory I) | Shared Promotion, with novelty-seeking aligned. An adventurous, open relationship. |
| Counter-pole | Owner (−Se Possessive A) | Same Aggressor but opposite polarity. Similar through the shared sensing function, but prone to clash — opportunity-seeking vs. target-fixation. |
| Cross polarity | Dreamer (−Ni Tragic V) | Uneasy about heaviness. Hunter's lightness can look frivolous to a Dreamer. |
| Cross polarity | Concierge (−Si Practical C) | Roles complement, but motivations diverge — certainty-orientation vs. opportunity-orientation. |
| Cross polarity | Mentor (−Ne Accompanying I) | The closeness of accompanying kindness can make Hunter restless. |
| Same kind | Hunter (+Se, both) | Contest for initiative. Both pursue opportunities, so the relationship is stimulating but exhausting. |
Hunter is distributed across two Quadras, γ and −δ. While sharing +Se, the style of pioneering diverges with the rational function (Fi / Ti) and the value-context.
SEE-Q Performer and ESI-Q Guardian. Under the influence of Fi (relational ethics), opportunity-capture is accompanied by personal charm and the screening of relationships. "Broadcasting one's appeal, then discerning who responds" — this individualizing thread sits at the center of motivation. Performer opens up opportunities through dazzling presence; Guardian through ethical judgment and directness.
SLE-Q Reformer and LSI-Q Overseer. Under the influence of Ti (structural logic), opportunity-capture is accompanied by systematicity and strategy. The orientation is to go beyond existing frameworks and build new structures. Reformer creates opportunity through destruction-and-creation; Overseer through fine-grained observation and decisive action.
Hunter's Promotion focus and opportunity-seeking orientation are consistent with several theories from psychology and evolutionary psychology.
| Theory | Correspondence with Hunter |
|---|---|
| Higgins (1997, 1998) Regulatory Focus Theory |
Promotion focus (pursuit of gain, new pioneering, approach to the ideal self). "Gaining" and "advancing" are at the center of motivation. |
| Sternberg (1986) Triangular Theory of Love |
Passion + Intimacy are central. The dynamic bond of the present moment is valued more than Commitment. |
| Gray RST | BAS (Behavioral Activation System) dominant — reward approach, novelty exploration. Corresponds to Davidson's left frontal asymmetry (approach motivation). |
| Buss evolutionary psychology | An opportunity-seeking mating strategy. Selection from a wide range of options, plus dynamic investment in the most responsive target. |
| Csikszentmihalyi Flow theory | Concentration and immersion in dynamic situations. The Hunter slips into flow most easily when "riding the wave." |
