Cato the Elder (Marcus Porcius Cato)
Statesman · Rome · 2nd century BC
Roman statesman (234–149 BC). A tenacious conservative who insisted at the end of every speech that "Carthage must be destroyed" — the embodiment of the virtues of old Rome. Left wide-ranging works on agriculture, law, and history. Known as "Cato the Elder" (Cato the Censor) to distinguish him from Cato the Younger.
