Type Naming Convention

Why three letters? How does it differ from MBTI's four-letter code? What do -Q and -D mean? The logic behind Socionics type notation, explained.

Structure of the 3-Letter Code

Every Socionics type name consists of three letters. Breaking down ILE as an example:

I
1st letter: Leading function
Intuition
Input axis
L
2nd letter: Creative function
Logic
Output axis
E
3rd letter: Orientation
Outward
Extrovert
Leading How the type takes in the world (input). The domain in which this type processes information most naturally. A strong, core function that never tires, even when used consciously for extended periods.
Creative How the type acts upon the world (output). The means by which input from the leading function is processed and expressed. A flexible, improvisational function that, together with the leading function, defines the type's essence.
Orientation Whether energy is directed outward (E = Extrovert) or inward (I = Introvert). Since the type's essence is fully determined by the leading and creative functions, the system is complete in just three letters.

The Four Function Letters

There are four function letters. What makes the system unique is that I and E serve double duty as both function names and orientation markers — distinguished by position. The 1st and 2nd letters denote functions (I/S/L/E); the 3rd letter denotes orientation (E/I).

I
Intuition
Possibilities, the future, abstract patterns
As the 3rd letter, means Introvert
S
Sensing
Reality, physical sensations, concrete facts
L
Logic
Laws, efficiency, cause and effect
E
Ethics
Emotions and interpersonal relations
As the 3rd letter, means Extrovert

The 1st Letter Reveals Rational vs. Irrational

Whether a judging function (L/E) leads determines Rational vs. Irrational — equivalent to MBTI's J/P. This information is instantly readable from the 1st letter alone.

Irrational
Rational
1st letter is I or S (perceiving function leads)
ILESEIIEISEEILISLE
1st letter is L or E (judging function leads)

Why does MBTI need J/P as a 4th letter?

Model K Suffixes — -Q / -D

Model K extends the traditional 16 types to 32 types by appending a -Q or -D suffix to each type.

Structural axis of information metabolism

16Personalities' -A / -T

An axis of emotional stability — Assertive vs. Turbulent. Derived from Big Five Neuroticism. Unrelated to Jungian psychology or Socionics.
