German philosopher (1880–1936). In his major work The Decline of the West (1918–22) he argued by analogy to organisms that civilisations follow a cycle of birth, maturity, and death, predicting the terminal decline of Western civilisation. A major thinker of the Weimar Republic era whose prophetic pessimism attracted both admiration and controversy.
