British Prime Minister (1874–1965). In World War II he declared total resistance to the Nazis and inspired the British people with speeches including "We shall fight on the beaches." After the war his Iron Curtain speech heralded the Cold War. A Nobel Prize in Literature laureate for his historical writing — a figure of towering ambiguity: wartime saviour and imperial apologist simultaneously.
