The only female emperor in Chinese history (624–705). In the Tang dynasty she seized power from the imperial harem, changed the dynastic name to "Zhou" in 690, and governed an independent empire. Expanding the civil service examination system and promoting talented officials, she was a capable ruler. An enduring figure of historical fascination — both celebrated as the ultimate feminist icon and condemned for ruthless methods.
