King · Zulu · 18th–19th c.
Founder of the Zulu Kingdom (1787–1828). Revolutionising the military system, he developed a small tribe into the most powerful kingdom in southern Africa. Replacing the throwing spear with the short stabbing spear iklwa and developing the bull horn formation — his military innovations are still studied today. Assassinated by brothers, his kingdom was soon conquered by the British — yet he remains a towering symbol of African military genius.
