Lucy Stone
Suffragist / Abolitionist · American · 19th c.
American suffragist and abolitionist (1818–1893). The first woman to hold a degree from an Ohio college; after marriage she kept her maiden name — inspiring the term "Lucy Stoner" for women who retain their birth names. She founded the American Woman Suffrage Association and the Woman's Journal. The most pragmatic and the most overlooked of the great suffragists — her state-by-state strategy ultimately proved correct when the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920.
