American civil rights activist (1913–2005). In 1955 in Montgomery she refused to move to the black section of a bus and was arrested — triggering the Montgomery Bus Boycott movement. Her act of individual moral courage catalysed the modern civil rights movement. Called "the mother of the civil rights movement," she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
