For 30 years as Richelieu's right hand, he moved France's foreign policy from the shadows — "the Grey Eminence," a name that became a byword for the hidden power behind the throne. While Richelieu wore cardinal's red, Père Joseph wore the grey habit of his order. He died before Richelieu, denied the cardinal's hat he had long been promised.
