Using the Medici Bank as his base, he became the de facto ruler of Florence and patronised Brunelleschi, Donatello, and others to make the Renaissance flourish — "Pater Patriae" (Father of the Fatherland). The supreme model of how financial power and cultural authority can be built simultaneously, studied by political scientists and business strategists to this day.
