Benedict of Nursia

Italian monk (c. 480–547). As the "Father of Western Monasticism," he established the Rule of Benedict. Placing "Ora et Labora (Pray and Work)" at the heart of the Rule, he shaped Western Christian spirituality for 1,500 years. His monasteries preserved classical learning through the Dark Ages.
