Irrational & Rational Elements
8 Basic Elements
Socionics defines 8 basic psychological functions (elements). Each element differentiates into 4 function codes through the combination of sign (+/−) and position (p/c).

The 8 elements are divided into two groups: irrational (intuition & sensing) and rational (logic & ethics). Click each card to see the 4 function codes and their characteristics.

Sign Theory
Sign Theory (+ / −)
Each function carries either a "+" or "−" sign. The sign is a fundamental dichotomy that defines the direction of information processing.

The sign indicates the fundamental mode of information processing: additive (+) or subtractive (−). Even within the same element (e.g. Ne), a different sign produces a completely different cognitive style.

Plus Sign — Process Type
Process / Evolutionary · Positive feedback
Basic Nature
Diffusive and constructive. A function of amplification and expansion that turns 1 into 100. Works to broaden possibilities, stack them up, and drive them forward.
Feedback Characteristic
Positive feedback. Effective only in the positive domain. A self-reinforcing type where output amplifies as the signal strengthens. Weak at corrections in the negative direction.
Cognitive Tendency
Immerses in the process itself, handling information within a continuous, stepwise flow. Dislikes having a started activity interrupted and finds meaning in the unfolding journey. Values the ongoing motion over the endpoint.
Representative Examples
+Ne-p Innovation +Se-p Legend +Te-p Profit +Fe-p Charisma
Minus Sign — Result Type
Result / Involutory · Negative feedback
Basic Nature
Controlling and convergent. A function that suppresses 100 to 10 and flips −1 to 1. Works to control excess, detect contradictions, and ground things in reality.
Feedback Characteristic
Negative feedback. Effective in both positive and negative domains. A self-correcting type that detects deviation and restores it. Capable of handling both positive and negative directions.
Cognitive Tendency
Moves in leaps toward results and endpoints, processing information with completion as the reference point. Can interrupt and resume easily, concentrating force at critical moments. Values the final outcome and endpoint over the details of the process.
Representative Examples
−Ne-p Paradox −Se-p Victory −Te-p Optimize −Fi-p Compassion

Position Theory
Leading Position & Creative Position
The "p" and "c" at the end of each function code indicate the positional role the function plays within the psychological structure.

"Position" defines the difference in how a function is used. Even with the same sign and element, information processing differs in agency and direction depending on whether the function sits in the leading position (p) or the creative position (c).

POSITION — P
Leading Position (p)
Program / Leading Position
Autonomously and proactively collects and evaluates information. Operates spontaneously without external prompting.
Defines the "purpose" and "criteria" of action. Processing in which the self is the subject.
Rather than broadcasting results outward, functions as an internal axis of evaluation and judgment.
In extraverted (e) elements, appears more action-oriented; in introverted (i) elements, more observational.
Tends to settle as a strength, but when overused can become a one-sided cognitive pattern.
POSITION — C
Creative Position (c)
Creative / Implementing Position
Receives the judgments and goals of the leading position (p) and serves to realize, express, and adjust them.
Generates the "means" and "implementation methods" of action. Reactive processing in which the other becomes the subject.
Responds flexibly to external stimuli and context, pursuing goals through varied means.
A source of creativity and adaptability, but easily loses direction on its own.
The creative function (c) is assigned a unique element per type and functions as a tool for realizing the purposes of the leading function (p).

Combinations of p/c with Extraversion & Introversion
The four combinations of extraversion (e) / introversion (i) with leading (p) / creative (c) each have different functional roles.

Examples: +Ni-p (Prediction), +Si-p (Well-being), +Ti-p (Rule), +Fi-p (Moral)
ec
Extraverted · Creative (e-c)
External Creative
Responds to external context while implementing goals through varied means. A source of flexible application and expressiveness.
Examples: +Ni-c (Future), +Si-c (Support), +Ti-c (Governance), +Fi-c (Influence)
ic
Introverted · Creative (i-c)
Internal Creative
Quietly implements and adjusts within internal processes. An unobtrusive inner creative engine that functions at depth.
Examples: +Ne-c (Hypothesis), +Se-c (Real), +Te-c (Technique), +Fe-c (Inspiration)

Coordination of Leading (p) and Creative (c) Positions
PROGRAM (p)
Leading function
Decides "what" and "why"
Purpose · Direction · Criteria
Command
CREATIVE (c)
Creative function
Realizes "how"
Means · Application · Implementation
In Model K, each type's base function (①) is placed in the "leading position (p)" and the creative function (②) is placed in the "creative position (c)". This ①→② chain produces the type's most natural cognitive and behavioral pattern.
Sociality — Communication Dimension

Vertexity & Nativeness
Definition of the Axes
The Socionics function system is built on two axes: "orientation (extraverted / introverted)" and "innate disposition (irrational / rational)". This section explains the definition and features of each axis.
Orientation (Vertexity)
The axis that defines the direction of a function: whether it faces external objects (extraverted, e) or internal impressions (introverted, i).
EXTRAVERTED · e
Extraverted
Focuses on the qualities of "objects, people, and events" that lie outside the observer
Direction of Information Processing
Seeks to grasp external objects and situations directly. Focuses on the qualities of the object itself (what it is).
Behavioral Tendency
Psychic energy tends outward; interaction with others increases energy. Strong tendency to take initiative in action.
Relation to Objects
Prefers breadth, expansion, and contact with objects. Gains information by engaging with many objects, people, and situations.
Corresponding Functions
Ne Se Te Fe
INTROVERTED · i
Introverted
Focuses on the "impressions and reactions" arising inside the observer; emphasizes the relationship and context with the outer world
Direction of Information Processing
Seeks to grasp the impressions, sensations, and relations that external objects produce within. Focuses on the relationship between object and self (how it feels).
Behavioral Tendency
Psychic energy tends inward; energy recovers through time alone. Tends to be passive, waiting for stimulus.
Relation to Objects
Prefers depth, quality, and context of objects. Gains information through deep engagement with a few objects.
Corresponding Functions
Ni Si Ti Fi

Innate Disposition (Nativeness)
The axis defining the nature of a function (perceiving or judging). A fundamental difference in innate information-reception style.
IRRATIONAL · Perceiving
Irrational
A perceiving style focused on sensation and insight — sensitivity to the "states" of body and mind
Basic Nature
Perceives the world "as it is". Rather than leading with judgment or evaluation, first takes in information as-is. Also called the Perceiving function.
Behavioral Tendency
Tends toward improvisation, acting while watching the situation. Flexible and tolerant; may change decisions frequently. Movements appear smooth and soft.
Decision-making Style
Takes on many things but may grow bored along the way. Leadership tends to be democratic (bottom-up). Relatively high stress tolerance.
Corresponding Functions
Ne Ni Se Si
RATIONAL · Judging
Rational
A judging style focused on "action" and "will" — decision-making and emotional expression
Basic Nature
Perceives the world while "evaluating and judging". Immediately subjects received information to logical or ethical evaluation. Also called the Judging function.
Behavioral Tendency
Tends to plan in advance and decide early. Strong-willed and reluctant to change a decision once made. Tends to carry through what they have started.
Decision-making Style
Movements are firmer and more controlled. Leadership tends to be somewhat authoritative (top-down). Relatively lower stress tolerance.
Corresponding Functions

Behavioral pattern: Persistence · Resolve · Focus · Completion
Introverted × Irrational
Receptive-adaptive Temperament
Receptive-adaptive
Moves at a quiet, unhurried rhythm. Gradually begins to act in response to external stimuli. Spends little energy and sustains well, but can be slow to start.
Behavioral pattern: Observation · Reception · Gradualness · Endurance
Introverted × Rational
Balanced-stable Temperament
Balanced-stable
Keeps a calm, steady pace while working diligently on one thing at a time. Highly planful and reliable. Prefers stability, is cautious, and persistently carries through whatever has been decided.
Behavioral pattern: Stability · Caution · Planning · Tenacity
Quadra & Function Values
Quadra and Function Values
In Socionics, a Quadra is determined by the combination of three secondary traits (judicious/decisive, merry/serious, democratic/aristocratic). A Quadra is a framework of shared social values defining which functions are "valued" by the group.

Each type has eight psychological functions, of which four are "value functions" (the functions that type naturally prioritizes and develops) and the other four are "non-value functions". The four types in the same Quadra share the same four functions as values.

The Three Dichotomies
⚖️

Judicious (peripheral) / Decisive (central)
Ne + Si pair → Judicious (peripheral)
Se + Ni pair → Decisive (central)
Decides which pair of irrational functions is valued

Merry / Serious
Merry / Serious
Fe + Ti pair → Merry
Te + Fi pair → Serious
Decides which pair of rational functions is valued
🏛️
Democratic / Aristocratic
Democratic / Aristocratic
Qi + De pair → Democratic
Qe + Di pair → Aristocratic
Decides the sociality pattern of asking/declaring
The 8 Quadras
The combinations of the three dichotomies yield eight Quadras.
How the Dichotomies Determine a Quadra

Judicious/Decisive sets the value pair for intuition/sensing, and Merry/Serious sets the value pair for logic/ethics. Together, they fix four value functions. Democratic/Aristocratic then determines the sociality pattern for asking/declaring (Qi+De or Qe+Di).

Worked Example: Alpha Quadra (α)
① Judicious → Ne (extraverted intuition) + Si (introverted sensing) are valued
② Merry → Fe (extraverted ethics) + Ti (introverted logic) are valued
③ Democratic → Qi + De sociality pattern (introverted asking + extraverted declaring)

Result: Ne, Si, Fe, Ti, Qi, De become the value functions of the α Quadra.
Conversely, Se, Ni, Te, Fi, Qe, Di become non-value (ignored) functions.
3D Structure of Quadra Values
The eight Quadras sit at the vertices of a cube whose three axes are the three dichotomies (Judicious/Decisive, Merry/Serious, Democratic/Aristocratic). Quadras at opposite vertices are opposed (α ↔ -α); Quadras linked by an edge share two traits.

Perceives people by group and attribute. Emphasizes hierarchy and the distinction between "us" and "them". Speaks in terms of social roles and positions.
Edge Relations — Friendly Quadras Sharing 2 Traits
Quadras connected by a cube edge share two traits and therefore four value functions. Each Quadra has three friendly Quadras.

Benefit Rings — Model K
Benefit Ring Theory
A Benefit Ring is a structure in which four types are linked circularly through Benefit relations. The Benefit relation is one-way: an asymmetric relation in which the benefactor guides the beneficiary. As four types cycle through A→B→C→D→A, patterns of social transition between Quadras emerge.

Model K defines 32 ring structures. There is a clockwise direction starting from Process types (extraverted × asking or introverted × declaring) and a counter-clockwise direction starting from Result types (extraverted × declaring or introverted × asking). Each ring always consists of four types, two Quadras, forming a dual-pair structure. Following a ring reveals how a society or organization transitions from one Quadra's atmosphere to another.

Supervision Ring
8 rings Regime shift

Set 1: transition within the same regime (Active Benefit + Mirror Supervision)
The Active Benefit Ring and the Mirror Supervision Ring come as a set — a combination in which the dual partners are swapped. A structure in which Quadras transition within the same regime (Democratic or Aristocratic).

Set 2: regime shift (Benefit Tension + Conflict Supervision)
The Benefit Tension Ring and the Conflict Supervision Ring form another set, likewise with dual partners swapped. Signifies a transformation across the Democratic ↔ Aristocratic regime boundary.

Each ring cycles through four types and always includes a diagonally opposed Quadra.

Ring Dynamics — Worked Examples
Active Benefit Ring — Democratic · Clockwise set
Quadra flow: α (Democratic) → -δ (Democratic) → γ (Democratic) → -β (Democratic) → α

① ILE-Q(α) → EIE-D(-δ) → SEE-Q(γ) → LSE-D(-β) → ILE-Q(α)
② SEI-D(α) → LSI-Q(-δ) → ILI-D(γ) → EII-Q(-β) → SEI-D(α)

Within the same Democratic regime, benefactors guide beneficiaries one-way. Because the regime does not change, the benefit is naturally accepted. ① and ② are the same structure with dual partners swapped.
Benefit Tension Ring — Regime-crossing set
Quadra flow: α (Democratic) → δ (Aristocratic) → γ (Democratic) → β (Aristocratic) → α

Q① ILE-Q(α) → LSE-Q(δ) → SEE-Q(γ) → EIE-Q(β) → ILE-Q(α)
Q④ LII-Q(α) → IEI-Q(β) → ESI-Q(γ) → SLI-Q(δ) → LII-Q(α)

The regime alternates between Democratic and Aristocratic. A ring where the benefactor's guidance places a burden on the beneficiary. Q① and Q④ are the same structure with dual pairs swapped.
Conflict Supervision Ring — Static · Process · Positivist set
① ILE-Q(α) → EII-D(δ) → SEE-Q(γ) → LSI-D(β) → ILE-Q(α)
② ESI-D(-α) → IEE-Q(-β) → LII-D(-γ) → SLE-Q(-δ) → ESI-D(-α)

Q/D and Democratic/Aristocratic are mixed. The supervisor provokes the supervisee's weak point, while the supervisee restrains the supervisor. ① and ② are the same structure with dual pairs swapped.
Set 1-A: Active Benefit Rings (8 rings)
Benefit rings within the same regime. The benefactor guides the beneficiary one-way. Because the shared ideology matches, comfort is high.

Rules of the Active Benefit Ring
All 8 rings are fully unified in four traits: orientation, positivist/negativist, democratic/aristocratic, and social will.
Because social will is automatically determined by the combination of orientation × democratic/aristocratic, in effect three axes (orientation, positivist/negativist, democratic/aristocratic) are fixed.
