The sign indicates the fundamental mode of information processing: additive (+) or subtractive (−). Even within the same element (e.g. Ne), a different sign produces a completely different cognitive style.
"Position" defines the difference in how a function is used. Even with the same sign and element, information processing differs in agency and direction depending on whether the function sits in the leading position (p) or the creative position (c).
Asking and declaring appear in function codes as Q (Questim) or D (Declarative). They are further distinguished by combination with extraversion (Qe/De) or introversion (Qi/Di).
| Code | Name | Direction of conversation | Characteristic pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qe | Extraverted Asking | Throws questions outward | Actively seeks dialogue and draws information from others' reactions. Tends to initiate conversations. |
| Qi | Introverted Asking | Circulates questions internally | Strong tendency to self-questioning; external questions only when truly needed. Active inner dialogue. |
| De | Extraverted Declaring | Broadcasts information outward | Broadcasts clear assertions outward. Constructs self-contained messages directed at an audience. |
| Di | Introverted Declaring | Settles conclusions internally | Solidifies conclusions inwardly before speaking. Minimizes external broadcasting; speaks with conviction. |
Example: the Ne + Si combination produces the judicious trait; Se + Ni produces the decisive trait. Function compatibility is the structural law describing which elements coexist in the same type.
| Extraverted (e) — External objects | Introverted (i) — Internal impressions | |
|---|---|---|
| Irrational · Intuition | Ne Intuition of Possibilities — perceives external possibilities, patterns, and connections | Ni Intuition of Time — perceives the inner flow of time, premonitions, and deep imagery |
| Irrational · Sensing | Se Volitional Sensing — perceives external physical reality, force, and presence | Si Experiential Sensing — perceives inner sensations, comfort, and bodily feeling |
| Rational · Logic | Te Practical Logic — judges external facts, efficiency, and practical results | Ti Structural Logic — judges inner structure, logical consistency, and principles |
| Rational · Ethics | Fe Emotional Ethics — judges the external emotional atmosphere, mood, and collective feeling | Fi Relational Ethics — judges inner interpersonal relations, moral values, and personal feelings |
Each type has eight psychological functions, of which four are "value functions" (the functions that type naturally prioritizes and develops) and the other four are "non-value functions". The four types in the same Quadra share the same four functions as values.
Judicious/Decisive sets the value pair for intuition/sensing, and Merry/Serious sets the value pair for logic/ethics. Together, they fix four value functions. Democratic/Aristocratic then determines the sociality pattern for asking/declaring (Qi+De or Qe+Di).
| Shared 2 traits | Quadra pair | Shared value functions | Social tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Judicious + Merry | α ↔ -γ | Ne Si Fe Ti | Intellectual curiosity and shared feelings; idealistic education |
| Judicious + Serious | -β ↔ δ | Ne Si Te Fi | Calm pragmatism, local self-governance, and peace |
| Judicious + Democratic | α ↔ -β | Ne Si Qi De | Individual freedom, spread of knowledge, progressivism |
| Judicious + Aristocratic | -γ ↔ δ | Ne Si Qe Di | Preservation of tradition and moderate conservatism |
| Decisive + Merry | -δ ↔ β | Se Ni Fe Ti | Collective mobilization, revolution, charismatic leadership |
| Decisive + Serious | γ ↔ -α | Se Ni Te Fi | Competition, concentration of power, strict meritocracy |
| Decisive + Democratic | -δ ↔ γ | Se Ni Qi De | Free-market competition, personal ambition, entrepreneurship |
| Decisive + Aristocratic | β ↔ -α | Se Ni Qe Di | Concentration of power, hierarchical order, imperial rule |
| Merry + Democratic | α ↔ -δ | Fe Ti Qi De | Global solidarity, innovation, technological advancement |
| Merry + Aristocratic | -γ ↔ β | Fe Ti Qe Di | Collective unity, propaganda, communalism |
| Serious + Democratic | -β ↔ γ | Te Fi Qi De | Individualism, respect for private property, libertarianism |
| Serious + Aristocratic | δ ↔ -α | Te Fi Qe Di | Conservative community, familialism, closed self-governance |
Model K defines 32 ring structures. There is a clockwise direction starting from Process types (extraverted × asking or introverted × declaring) and a counter-clockwise direction starting from Result types (extraverted × declaring or introverted × asking). Each ring always consists of four types, two Quadras, forming a dual-pair structure. Following a ring reveals how a society or organization transitions from one Quadra's atmosphere to another.
| Ring type | Count | Regime | Social meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-A Active Benefit Benefit Ring |
8 rings | Same regime | Set 1: transition within the same regime. A pair in which the dual partners are swapped. |
| 1-B Mirror Supervision Supervision Ring |
8 rings | Same regime | |
| 2-A Benefit Tension Benefit Ring |
8 rings | Regime shift | Set 2: regime shift (Democratic ↔ Aristocratic). A pair in which the dual partners are swapped. |
| 2-B Conflict Supervision Supervision Ring |
8 rings | Regime shift |
Set 1: transition within the same regime (Active Benefit + Mirror Supervision)
The Active Benefit Ring and the Mirror Supervision Ring come as a set — a combination in which the dual partners are swapped. A structure in which Quadras transition within the same regime (Democratic or Aristocratic).
Set 2: regime shift (Benefit Tension + Conflict Supervision)
The Benefit Tension Ring and the Conflict Supervision Ring form another set, likewise with dual partners swapped. Signifies a transformation across the Democratic ↔ Aristocratic regime boundary.
Each ring cycles through four types and always includes a diagonally opposed Quadra.
