Cuban revolutionary and head of state (1926–2016). He overthrew the Batista dictatorship in 1959 and led the Cuban Revolution. He survived the US economic blockade, the Bay of Pigs invasion, and the Cuban Missile Crisis — the longest-serving non-royal head of state in modern history. A supreme paradox: simultaneously a symbol of Third World anti-imperialism and of authoritarian repression.
