Rabindranath Tagore

Poet / Philosopher · Indian · 19th–20th c.

Indian poet and philosopher (1861–1941). He received the Nobel Prize in Literature (1913) — the first Asian to do so — for Gitanjali. He composed India's national anthem and was called "Gurudev (great teacher)" by Gandhi. A towering polymath — poet, composer, painter, novelist, playwright, educator — his vision of universal human dignity transcended the borders of religion, nation, and language.
