Rainer Maria Rilke

Poet · Austrian · 19th–20th c.

Austrian poet (1875–1926). In the Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus he questioned the inner abyss and the mystery of existence — the supreme achievement of German-language poetry in the 20th century. The Letters to a Young Poet remains one of the most cherished guides to the artistic vocation ever written. His influence on 20th-century literature, from Heidegger's philosophy to the New York School of poetry, has been immeasurable.
