Sergei Yesenin

Poet · Russian · 19th–20th c.

Russian poet (1895–1925). Beloved as the "peasant poet" for lyric poems celebrating rural beauty and Russian sentiment. Post-revolution anguish at the loss of the village and a self-destructive wandering life saturated his work. His tumultuous love affair with dancer Isadora Duncan was the scandal of the age. Dying by suicide at 30, he became the symbol of a generation consumed by the revolutionary transformation of Russian society.
