Chinese philosopher (551–479 BC). Founder of Confucianism, teaching an ethical and political philosophy centred on humaneness (rén), ritual propriety (lǐ), and virtuous governance. The dialogues with his disciples recorded in the "Analects" profoundly influenced China, Japan, Korea, and East Asia.
