Inquiry / Identification

DEFINITION

Definition

Inquiry explains the processes, causes and mechanisms of a phenomenon. Identification determines what an object is and what properties it has.

Separate from logical/ethical criteria. Both are capable of investigation and inference.

Inquiry

It attempts to explain the process and mechanism by which a phenomenon occurs. It not only gives a name to an object, but also appears as a figure that reveals what works and how.

  • When we come across a problem, we investigate the circumstances behind its occurrence and the cause-and-effect relationship.
  • Explain similar events by what mechanisms they have in common and what differs.
How is this happening?

If you focus too much on explaining the mechanism, it may become unclear what you are dealing with in the first place.

Identification

We try to determine what the object is and what its properties are. It appears as a figure that confirms the characteristics and reveals the true identity of the object.

  • When I come across a problem, I check what type of problem it is and what it targets.
  • Compare the characteristics of similar things and tell whether they are the same or different.
What is this and what kind of properties does it have?

If we are biased towards identifying the target, we may stop considering the mechanisms that occur even after we know the name or classification.
